German version below HortiBonn took part at the well-attended joint apple day of the Dienstleistungszentrum Ländlicher Raum (DLR), the NRW Chamber of Agriculture and the University of Bonn on 16 August 2024 in Klein-Altendorf.

The NIFAM project has reached an exciting milestone. On July 16, Bac Hong Cooperative and Garment 10 Joint Stock Company (Garco 10) met with the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute (FAVRI) to make final steps for cooperation on setting up vegetable stands at Garco 10, aiming to help garment workers access safe vegetables.

On July 9th, 2024, the Institute for Crop Science and Resource Conservation (INRES) Horticultural Sciences welcomed Douglas W. Hubbard, a renowned management consultant, speaker, and author of decision sciences and actuarial science.

On July 4th and 5th, 2024, HortiBonn’s Dr. Marcos Jiménez Martínez ABCDR and Simon Swatek REFOREST had the opportunity to meet poplar farmer and consultant Mr. Wolfram Kudlich at his office in Uffenheim.

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) celebrated the Drought and Desertification Day and its 30th anniversary in Bonn, Germany on 17th June 2024. On this occasion, the INTERFACES project team at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) gathered land lovers and heroes from diverse backgrounds around a panel discussion and an interactive marketplace to foster exchange on the topic “Science in Support of Combatting Land Degradation”.

On June 20th, 2024, the “Forschungsnetzwerk NRW-Agrar” invited agricultural stakeholders to Campus Klein-Altendorf to discuss the future of agroforestry in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Titled “Agroforestry Systems in Agriculture - A Perspective for North Rhine-Westphalia?

The HortiBonn group was in Brno, Czech Republic from May 23-27, 2024 to attend the 7th European Agroforestry (EURAF) Conference. 396 attendees were present from 43 countries, all to explore the potentials of agroforestry in transforming and improving agricultural landscapes across not just Europe but the globe.

The European Horticulture Congress in May 2024 in Bucharest, Romania attracted 700 participants from 67 countries. The congress was held in the Palace of Parliament, the largest administrative building (for civil use) worldwide built for Nicolae Ceauşescu.

Land-use conversion from tropical forests to monoculture cash crop plantations such as rubber and oil palm has been associated with many adverse ecological effects including increases in air temperature and in land-surface temperatures.

We are happy to announce the publication of a new research paper titled “False springs in the Netherlands - climate change impact assessment with the false spring damage indicator model,” which was just published in the journal “Regional Environmental Change”. With some support from HortiBonn’s Eike Luedeling, a team of students from Wageningen University, led by Joep Bosdijk, looked in to the past and projected occurrence of False Spring events in The Netherlands.
